Conferences are a great way to get to know the experts in your field, learn about the state-of-the-art-work, and have a great time while talking about research.

• First authors of lab publications will be paid to go to one relevant conference per year, depending on available lab funds.
• It is also possible to acquire independent funding for additional conferences through applying for student support programs. I encourage this and would be happy to assist with that process.
• Students should consider alternating between attending an engineering-focused and biology-focused conferences depending on a student’s interest.
• Members should be aware that they represent the lab during outings and conferences and should maintain a standard of professionalism.
• I will inform members in advance if outing costs will be covered.

In general, please follow the below steps when attending conferences:

1. Submit an abstract

• Unlike journal papers, it is okay to not use a declarative title to allow for the possibility that the results change between abstract submission and the conference.

2. Write the conference paper (if required)

• Keep the output short and to the point.
• If possible, prepare the paper to be ready to be submitted to a journal after you incorporate any audience feedback.

3. Practice your presentation

• Before attending a conference, it is expected that you will present your work to the lab in time for feedback to be incorporated. This should be a minimum of two weeks before the conference. Presentations will happen during the group lab meetings.

4. Enjoy the conference

• Network, professors want to meet students to discuss new ideas and hear about their work.
